8. Ridiculously over-designed survival machines.
The human race is peculiar. With just the skills necessary to avoid wild beasts on the plains of Africa, it has managed to grasp the scope of the largest scale of the Universe and the smallest scale of the constituents of the subatomic particles. We have not substantially changed in any way from our nomadic past and yet we have the God-like capacity to reflect on the whole dice and ball game. We are weird.
It just seems extraordinarily unbelievable that blind, unguided processes popped out a mammal on the plains of Africa, with a completely accidental bi-product of being God-like: able to do pure mathematics, astrophysics, microbiology, genetic engineering, contemplate morality etc.
Humanity is both the scientist behind the microscope and the subject under its own microscope. Why are humans so very very different to the other creatures who are also composed of DNA? Why do humans ask why? Why do humans consider questions of purpose and meaning? Why do humans wonder about why we ask why?
We can try to say it is all just one big accident – an accident that came out of a universe that magically appeared out of nothing – it came out of nowhere for no reason. However, it is not surprising this view tends to gain little traction in the daily lives of people. Everyone denies the hypothesis by the reality of their daily lives. They live with purpose.
